For the first year of their relationship, David and Alice maintained a long distance romance on opposite coasts through late night telephone calls and countless trips between Atlanta and LA. Since they had friends and family on both coasts, the couple decided on a wedding location at the midpoint between the two cities in Alice’s hometown of Austin, Texas – a city as quirky, friendly, and fun as the couple themselves. They dreamed of an eco-friendly wedding that exemplified rustic elegance. It was love at first sight when they visited Barr Mansion, a zero-waste venue with a gorgeous ballroom erected from raw cedar timbers that served only organic, locally-sourced food. The wedding ceremony was held in the gardens right before sunset, followed by cocktail hour under a hundred year old pecan tree (which also doubled as an escort card display) and a family-style dinner in the ballroom. In keeping with the eco-friendly theme, the wedding invitations were printed on reusable canvas bags, and the wedding favors were cookie mixes that included a list of “Other things you can do with a mason jar” on the recipe tag in order to reduce waste. The couple was able to stay within budget by enlisting the talents of the bridal party, who took on an ambitious number of DIY projects upon arrival, ranging from carpentry to designing the bouquets & boutonnieres to baking treats for the dessert table. Despite the frenzy leading up to the big day, the couple was all smiles on the actual wedding day and amazed at how beautifully everything turned out thanks to the tremendous efforts of their loved ones.
FROM THE BRIDE:
We wanted our wedding day to be playful, romantic, eco- & wallet-conscious. I was inspired by wedding pins, posts, and blogs. Admittedly, I was a detail-obsessed bride and put my bridesmaids and any volunteers to work. Luckily, I have the best friends a girl could ask for. Even on the night before the wedding, they were punching rounded corners on the programs for the ceremony and icing homemade heart-shaped cookies for our dream dessert table. Bonding with them over last minute details was one of the highlights of the entire weekend. They all rolled their sleeves up and dived right in to help us create our version of an unforgettable fairytale wedding.
